Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are smooth injectable anti-ageing gels which contain a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid which naturally occurs in our bodies. Hyaluronic acid gives the skin a rejuvenated look and it’s used to restore or add volume to the face. Dermal fillers vary in viscosity which determines which area they can be used in. Dermal fillers help to achieve the desired result, whether that is to provide lift or contouring, create symmetry, or enhance a particular feature such as the lips.

When injected into the skin, dermal fillers quite literally ‘fill out’ lines and wrinkles, volumise hollow, sunken areas of the face and define and reshape facial features.

Fillers last different times in different patients and in different areas of the face. The effects depend on range of products we use, some can last 18 to 24 months in areas such as the cheeks. However, for lip fillers (an area where there is more movement) repeat injection may be appropriate after 6 to 12 months (depending on which lip filler product is used and how big lip size is desired).

Immediately after the treatment, patients may experience slight redness, swelling or tenderness around the area that has been treated. These side effects are completely natural and tend to subside in one to two days for the vast majority of patients who experience them. On occasions, patients may also bruise but we try to limit bruising as much as possible. However, all of these symptoms will gradually disappear over a period of 7-14 days if all is well.

Range of products we use can already contain an anaesthetic known as lidocaine depending on requirement.

In addition, we offer additional local anaesthesia to all patients, either in cream or injection form, to ensure that the procedure is comfortable and as pain-free possible.

The treatment result time will depend on the area being injected and how much filler is needed. The initial improvement in appearance is immediate, with further improvement in the plumpness of the skin developing over the following one to two weeks.

Botulinum toxin injections relax muscle movement that results in wrinkles from dynamic movements of the face, while dermal fillers simply restore and enhance lost volume. Sometimes, these treatments are more effective when combined.
